The line diagram

Each member is a lane on the year axis, in the colour of the line the band was on. A filled station marks a joining, an open one a departure, a square a death. The dotted rail is a reunion. A dotted branch leads to a band that grew out of this one, or in from a band its members came from. The table below lists the same spells.

The line

    Seattle before the word

Mark Arm and Steve Turner's band of 1984, with Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament and drummer Alex Vincent, is the first Seattle band the word grunge was used for. Turner left in 1985 and Bruce Fairweather replaced him. The split in 1987 was over ambition: Arm and Turner wanted to stay small, Gossard and Ament did not.

Key album: Dry as a Bone, 1987
