The line diagram

Each member is a lane on the year axis, in the colour of the line the band was on. A filled station marks a joining, an open one a departure, a square a death. The dotted rail is a reunion. A dotted branch leads to a band that grew out of this one, or in from a band its members came from. The table below lists the same spells.

From the Detours to the farewell tour

Roger Daltrey's Detours, with Pete Townshend and John Entwistle, became the Who in 1964 when Keith Moon took the drums. Mod singles, Tommy, Live at Leeds and Who's Next followed. Moon died in 1978 and Kenney Jones, late of the Faces, took his place; the band split in 1983, played Live Aid and a few reunions, and came back for good in 1996. Entwistle died on the eve of a tour in 2002; the North American farewell tour was in 2025.

    Key album: Who's Next, 1971
