The line diagram

Each member is a lane on the year axis, in the colour of the line the band was on. A filled station marks a joining, an open one a departure, a square a death. The dotted rail is a reunion. A dotted branch leads to a band that grew out of this one, or in from a band its members came from. The table below lists the same spells.

The line

  1. Punk1976 to 1986

    The only band that mattered

Mick Jones and Paul Simonon came out of London SS in 1976 and took Joe Strummer from the 101ers. Keith Levene left within months; Terry Chimes drummed on the first album and gave way to Topper Headon, the line-up of London Calling and Combat Rock. Headon was sacked for his addiction in 1982, Jones in September 1983, and the band limped through Cut the Crap before Strummer ended it in early 1986.

    Key album: London Calling, 1979
