The line diagram

Each member is a lane on the year axis, in the colour of the line the band was on. A filled station marks a joining, an open one a departure, a square a death. The dotted rail is a reunion. A dotted branch leads to a band that grew out of this one, or in from a band its members came from. The table below lists the same spells.

    Twenty-six months

Malcolm McLaren put John Lydon in front of Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Glen Matlock in 1975. The Grundy interview, the Jubilee boat and one album followed; Matlock was out by February 1977 and Sid Vicious, who could barely play, was in. Lydon walked off stage in San Francisco in January 1978 and formed Public Image Ltd. Vicious died in February 1979. The four originals toured in 1996, and Jones, Cook and Matlock have played with Frank Carter since 2024.
