The line diagram

Each member is a lane on the year axis, in the colour of the line the band was on. A filled station marks a joining, an open one a departure, a square a death. The dotted rail is a reunion. A dotted branch leads to a band that grew out of this one, or in from a band its members came from. The table below lists the same spells.

The line

    Fripp's ship of Theseus

Formed in late 1968 and launched in 1969 with In the Court of the Crimson King, the band lost Lake, McDonald and Giles within a year and never kept a line-up long. Robert Fripp dissolved it in 1974, rebuilt it with Adrian Belew and Tony Levin in 1981, again in 1994 with two drummers and two Stick players, and again in 2013 with three drummers across the front of the stage. The last concert was in December 2021.
