The line diagram

Each member is a lane on the year axis, in the colour of the line the band was on. A filled station marks a joining, an open one a departure, a square a death. The dotted rail is a reunion. A dotted branch leads to a band that grew out of this one, or in from a band its members came from. The table below lists the same spells.

    Unknown Pleasures and Closer

Bernard Sumner and Peter Hook formed the band after seeing the Sex Pistols in Manchester in 1976, as Warsaw; Ian Curtis sang, Stephen Morris joined on drums in 1977, and Factory Records released Unknown Pleasures in 1979. Curtis took his own life on 18 May 1980, on the eve of an American tour. The other three went on as New Order.
